Cooking live rock

Hey all,

Im retuning to the hobby after some time. I have some old live rock from a bud that is in a tank that crashed. I was gunna cook it clean to use as base rock then reseed it with live rock. How do I cook it and for how long?

When I have cooled mine in the past, I used a rubbermaid tub with a powerhead and heater in it and hooked up an old skimmer and just let it all run for about a month. Changed out part of the water once a week and everything was fine and ready to go then. Others might have different ideas or ways as well.

That should be cooked instead of cooled....LOL!!

Why "cook" it? I'd just place it in a tub and let it sit with some lighting for 4-5 weeks. Then use it in the display. It is kind of like "cooking" it but it will retain most of the beneficial life while allowing pathogenic organisms to decline and reducing any residual waste materials during the process. I really see no reason to kill off coralline if there is no need.
