Mag7 to Eheim 1260 to Mag 5 or 1250?
Always ran a Mag7 for a return and wanted to switch to a 1260 because of the noise. 1260 had too much flow and more noise than I thought. Using the Mag7 again, cannot stand the noise. Will the 1250 have enough flow or should I go with the Mag5?
Thanks. |

by no means a pump expert, but eheim pumps are known for being much more powerful than their gph/headloss graphs. remember that when comparing them. the 1260 i had was MUCH more powerful than I calculated, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1250 was the same.

I've had a Mag7 and a 1260 and yes, the 1260 has a ton more flow. I thought the 1260 was pretty quiet. If the 1260 is too loud for you, you wont be happy with a Mag5 either. The 1250 will have substantially less flow. More like a Mag3 if that.

That's what I was afraid of; there is no middle ground between the 1260/1250. I'll try the 1250 anyway and see what happens; sounds like it will be whisper quiet, but have little flow...

I'm surprised that the 1260 has more noise then you thought. I had two 1260's, or 1262's I forget, and couldnt hear them at all.
You could T-off part of the flow and return to sump, or restrict the flow with a ball valve. |

I haven't tried your suggestions (thank you) but I don't believe those would address the noise aspect of my issue. I am also using mouse pads in the sump and all flexible vinyl tubing. |

I switched from a Mag7 to an Ocean Runner 2500 and am very pleased. Flow is about the same and is 1/2 the price of the Eheim.

IF you are looking for a another quiet pump that is comparable to the eheim. Try the ocean runner I am not sure what GPH they come in. But I own both eheim and ocean runner and they are very comparable in there noise factor. the only difference is that the ocean runner is a little larger but uses less wattage.

Sounds good, I forgot about Ocean Runner; do they tend to put out more flow than claimed like the Eheims? Don't want to have to buy 2 more pumps like the Eheim!
EDIT: Looks like the 2500 is comparable; thanks Rosco. Last edited by smleee; 02/27/2009 at 10:54 AM. |

IMO, the OR is a step down from Eheim, although many seem to have good luck with them. You can get the OTP pump instead as they are the same pump for less than an OR. The OR 2500/Octopus 2000 would have less flow than the Ehiem 1260 and may be a good fit.
Tunze has some new pumps out that are supposed to be very quiet and Eheim has the new compact+ pumps as well.
