The G3 is a good skimmer, but I plan on upgrading to a Bubble King Cone. I know that they are two different classes of skimmer. I run mine with the gate valve mod, which it makes it much easier to use.I think the G4 does not pump enough water through the skimmer and ASM's in general are very turbulent. I added an elbow to the feed tube inside the skimmer body and direct the bubbles straight down and it helps a little.

Also, I must say that IMO Sedras are not the cat's meow. Aquabees and Ocean Runners seem to create smaler bubbles. It also does not pump the GPH anywhere near what it did when I got it.

Here is my DoubleNW200 which I have skimming both sides "dry" - it has the consistensy of a weak custard and you can't even see through the skimmate:

And you don't even want to about the smell

a lot of people on here skim wet as a form of daily water changes. the key to this method though is to replace the sw on a daily basis.

+1 I think this is why you will get different reactions from people about skimmers.Finding a economical skimmer that skims allot of dry skimmate is not as easy.

I run Aqua C EV-120. I try to run dry, but an pulling about an inch and a half of brown diluted skimmate every 24 hours. I have to clean out my cup every day right now. It has only been on my tank for to weeks.

This is what there instructions say about running wet vs. dry.

"The decision to collect a watery, diluted waste product or a darker, pasty foam is a matter of personal preference. Simply put, on is not better than the other! Wet foam contains the same amount of waste product as dry foam, but is diluted with tank water. In other words, the skimmer is removing the same amount of waste weather it collects a cupful of yellowish liqued or 1/4" of dark gunk. Depending on how often you clean and service your system, one might be better than the other. we recommend frequent cleaning of your skimmer (2-3 times per week) and keeping it adjusted to collect a reasonbly wer, light green-brown foam product."

IMO if you and running a skimmer, you are better off than not running one at all.

They may say that, but I believe they are wrong if the wet skimmate becomes dry skimmate simply by draining.

When I read through the whole paragraph, it sounds like they want you to run it more on the wet side and they seem to back peddle by saying that depending on maintanence, one might be better than the other.

It takes me about 5 minutes to clean out the cup. I love the skimmer. It's a lot better than the seaclone that I was running before.

How do you adjust from wet to dry?
Is it just a matter of changing the water level in the Skimmer?

I have an Octopus 150 NW that is running wet , it pulls out a ton of nasty smelling stuff and needs to be cleaned out every other day.

Thanks T Kish

Lowering the water level in the neck will make it dryer. But it sounds like you are doing just fine.
