power filter anomoly

i have been running a whisper 30 on my 12 gallon for about 2 years and use the bio 3 inserts (and sometimes some purigen) and change the filter every 4-6 days. recently i put on the toms surface skimmer attachment which works fine (tight fit). the problem is the filter backs up and overflows into the tank within 24 hours. the impeller and flow is fine and the filter isn't dirty so i don't know why it would back up like that. i bought a BUNCH of these filters because they have a nice tight weave and only cost 53 cents ea. I even used a regular bio-bag which is much coarser and it too backed up. any thoughts?
