Its all about Xenia

hello!
!Lets just say I'm a beginner!
I currently have a two year old,14 gallon tank, with mushrooms, and polyps. But In my head there is this crazy idea of just having Xenia (pulsing Xenia) in the tank!

help me out, what should i know about the care for Xenia? tell my your experience,or any personal tips you may have, how about some pics( that will be cool)?

It grows like a wild fire, and it can take over your nice pieces of rocks. All my pics were deleted when they did the RC upgrade and I no longer have any( traded it all for other corals that don't grow as fast).

As far as care, I had mine closer to the top where it got lots of light and lots of flow. I could literally watch it get bigger every day.

wow sounds great! that's what I want.

I want my tank full pulsing Xenia. Did you dose any thing. i have heard they like high nutrients? That means dirty water? that' sounds wear, could that be true?

How about some pics??

If you like the pulsing xenia you'll get it, everywhere.

the fact with the xenia is they grow in some tanks and they don't grow in others, i think dirty water is the reason..

they are pretty hardy and they will survive almost anything just make sure your temp stays below 80 ! 76-78 is a good range !

(For what i can see you got a whole farm of this) thats sweet

So now I now know two things about Xenia
It prefers fats water flow and a 76-78 temperature. I get it!

so what else, how about lighting?

You see my xenia in the center of the tank. I started with a frag in August and already took that frag rock back with more xenia on it then when I bought it.

I have pretty clean water nitrates non detect and phosphates 0.01. I have a koralia 3 at 850 gph that doesn't flow directly on the xenia and an intank filter at 250 gph that is a little more direct. I have 5 HO T5 bulbs with individual reflectors. They are high quality bulbs from ATI and UVL. My tank is at 78.5 F but routinely went to 85 back in August and September and the xenia was thriving.

If you dose pulsating xenia with iodine they will pulsate like a 4th of july fireworks display.

Hey Frogman you definitely got a healthy tank and Xenia colony
(By the way those barnacles you have in the right side of your tank make it look really natural)

So for what you are telling me, it seems like Xenia prefers strong but not direct water flow, plenty of light and no phosphate at all.

that’s good information right there.

Dosing I iodine, really? How does that work?

Well so far I got a iodine bottle and a phosphate reactor I can use for this future Xenia Farm!

I only need a peace of pulsing Xenia. lol

What about water changes?

I don't dose iodine and my xenia pulse all the time. Also, I don't think temp is a big issue. At least I didn't see any problems when I was bouncing between 81 and 85 in the summer day and night cycle. In the winter I'm steady at 78.5 and they like that too.

I've heard they can melt at any time though. I don't think anyone has figured out what causes that. I haven't had mine go through that.

Take one stalk,stick in blender for a short burst,then pour in tank.You will have xenia everywhere,trust me it works.I will never will do that again. lol

It grows like a weed in my tank. I cut it down to almost bare rock every few weeks and in a couple days it's already got new growth. I have zero phos. .2 nitrate and grow sps and lps , zoas and softies in the tank under HM lighting.

The blended parts of the xenia grow all over everything. I've never tried it but I have heard this before.

I'd say 84 degress is the upper limit, based on the colonies I have. At 85 I saw pretty fast decline. (wife turned off the A/C) If you're gonna do all xenia, you may ask folks about keeping it trimmed. I've never tested this, but am told once they branch, they have a higher tendency to crash. I trim mine pretty often, and don't want to test the theory.

I honestly cant kill the stuff if I try. I pull it off the rocks to try and control it on a monthly basis. I would give you a bunch if you lived close to me. I now consider xenia a pest. My water runs about 80. I have a hard time finding anyone to give it to in Tucson.

The only thing that has set mine back is high temps,around 84 to 85 they start to wilt and melt.

when you mean "blended" you mean when Xenia has melted, almost dye?
For some of you Xenia has become a problem, That what I really want in my tank a lot of Xenia!
About the temperature lets just say 80 is the best target.

Aquaph8 would you really give me some Xenia, I live on Los Angeles. Is that close to you. I see you live on Tucson. That sucks

Grows like wildfire. I'll never put another pulsating xenia in my tank in a place where it can grow unchecked. It will have to be on a small rock sitting away from the main reef. Use to fight it constantly. Seem to like bright light, mine was under MH.

opacheso, find a club in your area and I'll bet someone will be glad to give you some. I know of very few people that have had it for over 6mo that wishes they didn't put it in there tank.

(sump in the makings) Predominately LPS and Zoas and a couple rics.
