What is this?
I've notice these things in my sump lately... They are attached themselves to the walls and skimmer. At first I didn't think anything of it. Now it has me concerned.
If it is bad... what do I do? |

It's a sponge, I've heard them called q-tip sponges. don't worry about them, they filter the water for you.

I always find it a plus when stuff like that starts growing. Makes the tank look established.

Thanks for the help... It is hard not to always jump to conclusions. Glad it is a good thing.

I have a couple more questions regarding these sponges. I still have them in my sump... quite a few.
It doesn't really bother me except.... When I turn my pump off to change the filter sock. When I turn the pump back on tons of these sponges are spit out into the tank. Then they are all just floating around until they get sucked in the overflow. I see my fish trying pecking at them. Could this be a potential problem with dumping a ton of what I would think be nutrients into the tank all at once? Will the fish or coral eat them? I have a duncan and some other softies. Should I consider adding any kind of critter to my sump? Or just let things be? |

I wouldn't worry. Consider it another form of zooplankton. If some of your fish eat them, it's a plus.
