What is the purpose of your refugium?
It depends on what you are trying to accomplish with you fuge as to what can go into it. I keep various filter feeding animals, macros, and herbivores/detrivores in mine. The purpose is threefold for me, food production for my seahorses, nutrient removal, and a secondary DT.

if you ever have something that behaves poorly in the DT it can go in there, possibly get some rotifers or amphipods. aside from macro algae i wouldnt say there is anything that you neeeed to put in it, just more what do you want to put in it.

I am planning for it to be used as nutrient removal and food production. it is not very large maybe around 10g, I guess it isnt really to specific as to what i should put in there, I just dont wan to get to redundant or have things that will produce a negetive. my dt is mainly mixed reef, i dont wan to put anything in the fuge that will reverse the affect that it is intended for

If you are using it for food production, I would not add any crabs or larger omnivore invertebrates, especially since it is small (you dont want them eating the food opportunistically). You can have a variety of macros, however, if you have a bunch of different types, it will take more maintenance on your part to ensure that one doesnt take over. Have fun with it! A few companies sell nice 'starter kits' where you can get a bunch of copepods/amphipods/mysis etc. to start it out.

I personally got the Inland Aquatics Detritivore kit. It has baby bristles, mini and baby brittle stars, Gammarus and Mysys Shrimp, Copepods and Amphipods. I have a DSB in my refugium, and it's health was my primary concern, but I don't think you could go wrong with it. A month after adding it, my refugium is teeming with life.
