New to the hobby... again. What's changed?
Hey everybody!
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I'm getting back into the reef keeping hobby after a 5-6 year absence (graduate school). I used to have a 30 gallon reef and worked for an aquarium company that installed very large tanks/reef systems for restaurants/hotels/well-to-do folks/etc. So my question is this: What big developments have occurred in the hobby in the last 5 years? Any breakthrough products in lighting, protein skimmers etc? Any new reefkeeping techniques take the hobby by storm recently? Fill me in! What's new!? |

I'm sure things are changing daily! I'm just curious if there have been any BIG changes that come to mind. Any techniques/products that have been abandonded, etc. Big sweeping changes. I just learned Euro-Reef is no longer in business (wow). Those types of things...

5-6 years isn't too bad. Its not like water isn't wet anymore.

I would say that not much has changed that has massively impacted marine aquariums, though there is alot of new technology that is slightly making it easier/improving on old ideas.

well, good to know that my knowledge of the hobby isn't all that obsolete after all. I gotta say though, some of these new plug and play reef systems look really cool! (redsea max, solana, etc) Are any of them worth checking out?

Yeah, I'm just getting back into this too...Seems the popular skimmer has changed, something about vodka dosing, etc. Lots to learn.
