single vs dual overflow for 125G

I'm planning a new system, will probably be a 72x18x22 125G. The return pump is only going to do ~4x display volume, and additional flow will be supplied by powerheads. Is there any reason to go with dual overflows in this scenario, or will one be fine? It seems very common to have dual overflows for tanks this size and larger.

I bought my 125G, and it already came with dual overflows. With 1.5 inch drains, and 1 inch returns. I also run close to 4x turnover.

I run a mag 9.5, and one overflow is enough for this pump, but I use both of course. The 1.5 inch drain's are overkill for my turnover.

In retrospect I would have perfered one overflow, but with two drains, and 1 return. The boxes themselves take up plenty of room.

I'm guessing you're using a durso or something else that has air going down the drain. If you switch to a herbie setup you won't have to throttle the mag down so much. A full siphon drain can handle a lot more gph.

Yup, the boxes do take up a lot of room. I'd like to set up a gyre for flow, and one corner overflow would be best for this. I've been looking at the Aqueon site and I don't see any single overflow big tanks though.

IME, 2 drains is always better than 1, even if #2 stays unused in the same overflow - Murphy is alive and well and lives in YOUR aquarium, just waiting for a chance to flood your house!!!!

The Herbie style setup already has a dry backup drain just in case. So, in my case, there's no need to have a second overflow box in the tank just for backup.
