corals out of water

how long can corals be kept out of water safely, if, say, you're doing a 50% water change or something...?

I don't know how long exactly, but I know your fine for a few hours. I have fogotten frags that were left dry several times and never had a problem. I think some people ship frags dry as well.

they can last for a while, but i would every so often get tank water and pour it over them, just to keep the wet.
Note: there will be a lot of sliming when you fill the tank back up, why such a large water change?
I think you will be better off doing small 5 gallon water changes daily over the course of a week, 10 gal depending on your tank size.

I've seen people who drain the tank 50% once a month or so...there was a thread here in the last day or so with a tank packed with SPS. I think the time it takes you to drain the tank and fill it up would be ok.

Sometimes a large WC is whats needed. If you nitrates are real high then a large WC is in order. All you will do is remove very little nitrate with each small WC. If you do 2 50% changes over a weeks period you will have reduced your nitrate by 75% of your initial level.

\As for your coral most will be fine being out of water for an hour or so just put a moist paper towlel on them if they are out of the tank.

it wont kill them, corals in wild are out of water for couple hours at a time at low tide.

but they sure do get stressed and if the coral is not doing good, it may die from the stress.
