Heater question

Hey guys,
I've got 2 questions for ya. First off my old heater (less then 6months old) cracked and started smoking? Wasn't sure if it was smoke or fine bubbles because the lights were out. The next day i noticed all my corals shrunk and lost 2 fish. Did the heater leak something into my tank? Or was it from the electricity that was leaking in the tank for who knows how long/temp drop from no heater? The rest of my fish are acting fine again but my corals are still small. Now i replaced the heater with a marineland Stealth pro rated for 75gal/250 watts. What is annoying me is the temp is way off.. I've currently got it set at 85f, the water temp is 78f and the heater is off. Whats worrying me is will the heater randomly start working right and raise the water temp to 85f? Or will it stay at 78?

Thanks,
~Nick

You need to get your tank on a controller.

You can get ranco temp controllers from ebay pretty cheap.

An entry level reefkeeper lite isn't much more and will let you shut down lights as well as heaters should the tank start to overheat.

You should run some treated poly filter in your sump. It will absorb heavy metals that might have leached into the water from the broken heater.

A water change would also be a good idea
