sump design and redesign

I built a 55 sump for under my 120. I also built it before I had my skimmer The skimmer I got doesn't fit in the skimmer area now by atleast four inches. Can i just cut that baffle out and have a large skimmer/return area? Is there some better answer?

You can do that, but only if you have a great ATO for the sump. You may also have issues with bubbles since you don't have the bubble trap to remove them. The biggest problem would be fluctuating water level messing up your skimmer which is where the ATO comes into play. I use a Level Loc ATO which keeps the water level within a 1/4".

Yeah, I don't have a ATO. Still going old school here and topping off daily by hand. How about setting up another tank next to my sump and plumbing in to hold the skimmer? Basically the same princible right? I could then take out the baffle and have a larger water volume in the main sump.

You can do that also if you have the room. The second rank does basically what the baffle partition would in the sump.

How is the Level Loc? Is it very reliable connecting it straight from your ro/di unit?
