quick question about cycling

ok so when i finally get everything set up and start my cycle up would it be ok to have the tank cycle w/ no lights for a few weeks max???

I have been told yes, and some even prefer it because it may keep algae growth down.

It shouldn't be a problem. I did it like that for one of my tanks years ago and never saw a difference between cycling with or without lights.

nice next question the used tank i bought needs a serious cleaning i'm gonna go at it w/ a 4in razor but i think i'm gonna dump a gallon of white vinegar into it and fill it most of the way and let it soak for a day before i go at it! its a 58g what do you think ??

I think you'll need more than a gallon if you are going to also fill it with water. I did it with 1 gallon of vinegar per 10 gallons of water and let it sit (with powerheads for circulation) for about 24 hours and it was pretty good.

I wouldn't waste the vinegar, once you dilute the vinegar with that much water it would take a very long time to do anything. Start scrubbing and be careful, you don't want to create a bigger mess!

When I got rid of our corals and cleaned the tank. I heated straight vinegar in the microwave. I used a rag to slop it on and soak for a few and then would scrape at it. I repeated for problem areas even holding the soaked rags on the area for a few. Seemed like with it heated it made it less work. Rinsing extra well when I was done. Im pretty sure I read that tip from someone here on RC. You guys are genius on your tips and tricks. My tank looks new thanks to the post I read.
