Vertex Illumina vs. Vertex Illumilux LED lights
What's the deal with these? The Illumilux are sold in the US an a lot cheaper. Anyone have any experience with these?

Illumilux are meant to be supplemental light- replacing the t-5s or pc that go with your halides. They are not dimmable, you plug them in and thats what you get. They can be used as a primary light source but a few would be needed. They do not conflict with orbitecs patent and are available for sale in the US.
Illuminas are fully controllable and would be the only light needed. they are not available in the states due to orbitecs patent. They can be shipped to the US from Canadian companies. I ordered mine from-- http://www.jlaquatics.com/info/410/V...+Fixtures.html There are two long threads that are worth reading if you want detailed info: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1873481 http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1943140

reb, thanks for the info. Now I understand. The prices were so different that I knew there had to be a catch... I guess you get whatt you pay for.
I just cannot afford the $4500 price tag for the Illuminas. Do you have any suggestions for quality LED lighting for my 72x18x30" acrylic setup under $1000 besides the Auraled's on eBay? I have a FOWLR now because I have no chiller, but looking to add corals... Thank in advance

I thought these had the little plug on the side to add a controller ? Wonder if the Cerebra is compatible with this ? I kinda see the Cerebra as a work around on the Orbitec patent since the controller is a separate unit .

The Illumilux can be a single lighting solution as well. I'm getting ready to try a single 36" Illumilux 50/50 over a 75g soft/lps system. I will most likely need a second module to go with it, but I'm going to see how the single one goes first.

For my upcoming 48x30x20 I'm using 3x 1200mm Vertex Illumilux units. May consider adding a 4th depending on how they go. I did consider the Illumina but after talking to Vertex, I'm confident these units will be more than adequate. I think the fact that the unit has been taken to be a supplemental unit ignores the fact that it was also designed as a stand alone unit in its right, stressing a greater flexibility to its function.

So, I did some investigation on the Vertex Illumia and why BRS and Premiumaquatics doesn't carry the illumina.
I started by emailing a British vender to inquire if they ship international. However, they shut me down quick. No, they did not with no explaination. Try to figure out why they would not dare to ship internationally, I remembered the patent issues and how more importantly the fixture will not work on our grid. (UK 220/US 110). I then searched for countries with the same grids as the US, turns out Canada has the same grid. I then emailed JL Aquatics in British Columbia. I got word from them that they do ship to the US, but that there is one US retailer left, Proline Aquatics in California. Ecstatic that there possibly might still be a vendor in our great nation, I saught out Proline Aquatics' sales team. There is **** news and good news... **** News: Vertex illumina is extinct... Went out of product last year. Good News: there is a new model coming out Spring 2016. Let's see! Just around the time I'll be ready to fire my 40 build up. |
