I had a hair algae problem but I started using the vodka dosing method(search here for it) and within a few days my algae is gone and my nitrates went from close to 100 down to less than 20 in 2 weeks. I stopped for a week and the algae came back so i started adding the vodka again and in two days it's almost all gone again. just make sure you use the formula for figuring out how much vodka to use(like i said search for vodka dosing method on here). Just a temp fix but when i switch to a larger tank the new set up i am build ing will address the issues that caused the high nitrate and phosphates in the first place
