DIY Refugium Light for Oceanic BioCube
I recently saw a LED style magnetic refugium light for sale on a few aquatic sites. It was a bit expensive so I hadn't purchased it yet.
The other day I was at Home Depot, looking for some replacement t5 sockets and found a hampton bay LED puck with 4 LEDS in a cool white light (which is typical of LEDS) so I decided to pick it up because it was only 9.99 or something cheap like that. I had some magnets I purchased of KJ Magnetics online, which are the super strong neodymium magnets. I have about 10 that are plastic covered and the rest are raw neodymium. I glued the sets of raw neodymium to in the LED in a cross form (4 total), used the spacers provided with the magnets to add another layer of space with another magnet (didn't glue this bit because it works with magnetism). Then I placed the light onto the 'window' of the refugium and on the inside of the tank, I attached the plastic coated magnets and allowed nature to do it's job. It's been over a week and the macro is still alive.

Inspired by your led I threw this on the back of my tank:
http://www.lowes.com:80/pd_352725-47...amp&facetInfo= And was shocked to find a ball of chaeto turned into a sump filling square within 6 days! The tag on the lamp says it's 2700k to 5000k. Not sure how they can't get a more accurate temperature but it's red and it works! |

Awesome! It's still running strong and growing chaeto in the back, even the level is low for a couple days it's still growing.

What was the model number for the K&J magnets you used? I'm dealing with same issue in getting light back there.

I usually get the D84PC-BLK for the instide of the tank or a similar plastic covered one for the inside.
On the outside I believe I used ZD3 and stacked them up with the spacers that they came with to leave about 1/2"-1" gap between the light and the gap |

I think I'm going to move it to the inside soon though and grow a mangrove in the return instead or get another one to try for a mangrove
