Refugium Flow: Chaeto

hey I was wondering how you get chaeto to tumble in the refugium. Mine always ends up flowing to the return end and sitting. I've heard of people using a bubbler to make it roll, and that seems like it would work great, but also seems like a mess.

You can use a few powerheads positioned strategically to keep the cheato rolling around. I have seen a few people with balls of cheato tumbling in their refugium. A few air wands would probably be cheaper to setup although the splashing is sure to build up some salt creep. What is the benefit to keeping cheato suspended?

Best of luck to you!

Louis

I stretch mine out like carpet for the bottom of the sump. It will fill in thick, then you take half of it out and stretch it back out again. IME i get faster growth when its filling in then when its in a ball growing out.

Cool. Thank you. And as far as I know the only benefit of keeping it suspended and rolling is have all the sides catch light. Don't want to have half of it grow while the other half dies. The carper idea is simple and great.

Jim Stine from LaFishGuys has a nice (not so little) 5 video series about refugiums and their purpose.

And in this video, also LAFishGuys, his friend shows how he grows algae is a 100 gal. refugium. He shows the refugium at about 3:00 (Three minutes) into the video.

I have always spread the ball out and prune once it gets compact. I typically don't see die off unless I neglect the algae for a while.
