New return pump for a 90 bow

Hello,

I'm doing a build on a 90 gal bowfront (48x18x24) with a 30gal sump. I currently have a herbie overflow setup with 1" bulkheads. The tank came with a Mag-drive 12 which is way too loud even after impeller replacement. The pump has a return head of approximately 6 feet. There are 2 koralia 3s and I bought two extra koralia 1400 evos for flow if needed. Can someone recommend a replacement pump. I'm not sure how much flow I need, but of premium importance is noise. This is in the living room and has to be as quiet as possible (the herbie overflow silenced everything else and now all I hear the pump rattling)! I've heard the eheim pumps are dead quiet. Thanks in advance.

I just bought a RIO pump and it is very quiet to the point that I can not hear it run. The price was great as well, I believe model was 14HF.

A Mag12 seems to me like a lot of flow for a 90. I used a Quiet One 4000 on mine and couldn't have been happier, my skimmer and other pumps definitely overpowered its noise, and they are pretty cost effective as well

Have you tried damping the noise with a mouse pad or foam ?
I prefer to use Eheim pumps model 1260

Thank you all for the very quick responses. The pump is making for of a rattling noises, not so much vibration....and yes a mouse pas is between it and the sump. I have broken two impeller shafts on this pump already and am worried that the newest one may be broken too...but I',m afraid to open it and check as I'm concerned opening the housing is what did it. Anyone have this problem before? As a noob question, what type of flow rate should I be going for. The mag 12 is currently running full (but 8yrs old), and I have a gate valve on the outflow that is about 1/4 shut.

3 to 5 on the turn over rate . Other's may state differently . I rely on internal flow ( in the tank ) . I prefer the skimmer catch as much as it can , hence the slower turnover rate . Sounds like u just need a new pump if u have already replaced several impellers.

Agreed...so 3-5x the turnover in the sump or display? If the sump then thats only 150 and would make even the eheim 1260 seem like major overkill? Would the 4 koralia be enough flow for SPS?

Return Pump Options

I run a Tunze Silence return pump, I have a 72 ga bowfront so I use the smaller one with a 634gph output. They have the next larger on I believe is like 800gph that may be better for your since its a 90ga. I love how quiet it runs, cant even hear it, I have my system in the bedroom so noise is a big concern for me. Goggle them, I am highly recommending them, not too expensive for the quality German made Tunzes 1073.040.

I like the eheim and also just bought a water blaster pump that is quiet and works like a charm, granted its only a month old.

overall turn over. also if i was you id save your money and not spend it on the koralia. save up the cash and buy ecotech's mp40wes. reason being is 1) the flow is great and creates no dead spots, 2) the under toe effect, 3) changeable modes and flow, and 4) you can buy a second one and connect them wirelessly to create a custom flow. good luck if you can bite the bullet on the price get the mp40. you get what you pay for trust me.
