last attempt at an ID
Been trying to get this ID'd, but was never able to get a good shot. Today I got a decent one. It's the shape of a mushroom but looks like an anemone on top. It has a disc with white spots and a "mouth" and then a bunch of tentacles. It stretches towards light. I am trying to find out what it is, to determine if it needs to be moved. It was a hitchhiker on my LR so it's currently in sort of a "cave". It moved around on its own the first few days but has sort of settled in since it can't really get to any other good places to get light.
It's about 2 inches tall and maybe just as wide/round. This shot is basically looking straight down at it, so you can't see the foot/stem. Also people keep saying this is aiptasia, but it looks nothing like any other aiptasia I've had in my tank nor any pictures I can find. It's clear/translucent, bigger than a golfball (HUGE compared to other aiptasia I've had/seen) etc. Last edited by f3honda4me; 01/13/2012 at 09:27 PM. |

Aiptasia --- pest anemone, can spread to plague proportions if not controled.

I agree, it looks like aiptasia. I'm in the process of trying to rid my tank. Just put in some peppermint shrimp for the small ones and using Aiptasia X on the big ones. The Aiptasia X work great, immediatly killing the aiptasia without affecting the rest of the tank.

I don't understand how it's aiptasia? It's clear/translucent and white. It is HUGE compared to the other aiptasia I found in my tank? It's bigger than a golfball. I haven't been able to find any aiptasia pictures on the internet that look like what this is. :/

Alright Ill kill it then. Do you think the 3 peppermint shrimp I'm getting next week might be able to kill it?

It's my understanding that peppermint shrimp usually only go after small ones... just what I've heard
As a side note: My Cheto came with an aiptasia that was at least golf ball sized

Also, peppermints CAN be hit or miss. you could very well get 3 that won't touch the aiptasia

It is definitely aiptasia. I have them in my sump and overflows. They are clear/white where they don't get a lot of light. They get large if they're in an area where they can trap food. They are pink and brown where they get good light. They're just like any other anemone the problem with them is they multiply beyond belief and can totally take over the reef. Get rid of it! I've had luck with peppermint shrimp but they may not go after one that big so you need to intervene. I've also read many have had luck with berghia nudibranch.
