Skimmer stops working after water changes

I have a marineland 300 skimmer, which works awesome. Until the power goes out or I do a water change. It fills with water, but no air, just makes a weird clicking noise. If I pull it out of the water while still powered on and then put it back in it seems to work again. Any ideas?

weird. maybe the pump is on its way out. if you can do a motor swap with a higher end skimmer pump. just my .02
