Tank help
Hello everyone in a nutshell i have a 55 gl saltwater fish and reef hob aqua c skimmer just got a ehiem 2026 cannister got tired of looking at the hob filters. I know i need a sump my stand will not hold a twenty gl tank so no sump i stay in apartment and have no place for it also have 250 watt metal halide with 50 watts led. Now my question is, a refugium the same as a sump and if i could use a cpr hob refuge would it solve the issue im sure im going to run in with this cannister. I forgot 50 lbs live rock estimate about the same in live sand. Thx in advance!

Hey amazing. It's 4am here so forgive me if I didn't completely answer your question. A sump and a fuge are two different things but a fuge can be incorporated into a sump. A sump is an area to allow for added water volume as well as a place to put equipment such as skimmers heaters, reactors, fuge, etc. The added water volume alone is very beneficial and once you incorporate a fuge for growing pods/ nutrient transport, less cluttered display, and a place for dosing equipment and a skimmer, its a no brainer not having one. SInce you have a standard 55 you could get away with a CPR HOB fuge. I actually have one for sale if your interested (medium sized). It's a good place for chaeto and pods/shrimps to grow and feed your main tank to an extent. I'd only run carbon or gfo in your canister, your live rock is your real biological filter unless your very routine on changing your filter media. PM me if your interested in the CPR it worked great until i upgraded and went with a sump.

I should mention that you do need at least 5" of clearance in the back of your tank for the cpr. Unless your willing to drain it and move it back from the wall.

My tank is new (40g Long), i had an ac110 power filter on it while it cycled and then got a CPR HOB fuge, I got the medium with the light. I am hoping it will be worth it.. at the moment it has 4" of sand in it, some live rock and some chaeto. I also have some chemi-pure in there hopefully sucking up some phosphates. Its only been on there for 3 weeks or so. I notice CPR also do some which come with skimmer built in.
I am noob so I can't really comment on if its 'better' than a mechanical filter but i sure hope so!

Well i just went to a sump from the eheim 2620 but it is a modded wet/dry but its the only thing i could find to fit under my stand my overflow is going into a sock filter than i have live rock 1 or 2 med size ones than a lil bit of sand my old filters out of my hob filters(benifical bacteria) and some activated carbon then i have all things in the return area heater, hob skimmer, of course pump and my water is cloudy than before. I just tested phos. Ammonia, nitrites and nitrate all levels where. Excellent whats wrong? Does it take a few days for my new filtration to start working and shouldn't my live rock in the 55gl be keeping it clear anyway? Idk getting comfused and i little worried for the live$tock!
