Upgrade from 65RR to 90 Gallon Sumpless Reef Tank

I couldn't pass up the good deal I got on it. It has the black silicone and looks so nice. Now I know some of you are asking why I didn't drill it; well I like the fact that I can sleep at night and also go out places without having to worry about some type of catastrophe happening like a flood.

I know this will take good husbandry and I'm ready for it. Filtration consists of a Fluval 405 Canister with only chemi-pure and the 4 sponges(I clean the sponges twice a week), Eshopps PSK-100H skimmer and about 100lbs of LR. Tank has only been up and running for 2 weeks and did my first water change yesterday, about 20 gallons.

Here is a quick pic of it. Background got a little wet and looks crappy.

Thanks. I'm running (2) 120W Dimmable LED Pendants with Cree 3W LED's.

I have a 135g non drilled mixed reef and I'm running a HOB skimmer (Eshops) and a CPR HOB Aqua fuge. I travel alot for work and didn't want to worry about a sump / overflow either. I tucked the skimmer intake into the back corner and built up rock work to hide is a bit.

The CPR I found local for a fraction of the cost new.

Hello from another fellow sumpless reefer!

Currently, I have removed my hob filter to experiment. I like the fact that my tank is dead silent. My Warner Marine H2 intake and output pipe are the only pipes in the tank and they are barely noticeable since they have coralline all over them. I grow lps and softies with no problem.

I had the old school CPR and sort of liked it but it was a little too loud and I didn't like the fact that the pump sat inside the tank. Which version do you have?

And AMEN to not having to worry about leaks or having water all over the place while gone.

The only thing I can (barely) hear is the pump for the skimmer. I have to get close to it to actually hear it running. The Eshopps only has the intake and output that go in there. The Fluval has some type of surface skimmer that I bought on Amazon for $12 and keeps the surface nice and clean, almost as if it were an overflow.

I have the "Large" CPR and yes the pump sits in the tank but mine came with a small black box that resembles an overflow so it's not unsightly at all (IMO). Mine doesn't make any noise at all (slight water sound as it flows into the last chamber) but I also lowered the output so it's below the water surface.

My Vortech is louder than the skimmer so I really only hear it when I'm up close to the tank.

One thing, although my tank is also sumpless please don't give others the impression that "sumped" tanks have a propensity to leak or are a catastrophe waiting to happen. A properly set-up overflow can be silent and failsafe.

I agree 100% with this. I shut all my pumps off everyday to feed and designed it so no floods and I blocked the drain hole and let the pump and it does not overfill the tank. Just design it right.

At one time I had a Lifereef 2x U-tube overflow on this tank. Once I got everything dialed in it was fine but after a fish or two getting sucked through the tube and ending up in the overflow box my concern for a blocked utube while I was traveling got the best of me.

If the tank had built in overflows (I had a 90 that did at one time) I would feel much better about having a sump.

As for noise I realized last night that I replaced the pump on the CPR with a Maxijet 400 which flows a little less than the stock pump so the noise level is lower.

I never said that sumped tanks aren't safe. I just simply stated that I was always worried about something happening to MY tank because I'm not home too often. I was actually thinking of drilling this one but I didn't find a "need" to have one besides hiding the equipment.

I actually have one but I haven't set it up. I just top off with RO/DI water when I get home. I'm actually surprised that I don't have as much evaporation as I did with the 65.

Thanks. I had the 65 set up for about 2 months. Only thing I changed was the sand. I had a DSB but with the finer sand and I didn't like that it blew around all over the place so I went with argonite.
