Fish hitting the glass.help!
Hi there I need help asap.my Melanurus wrasse is swimming with his fins spiked up and is hitting the glass like he wants to eat it lol I don't know how to explain I saw small scratches on the acrylic where he usually does that and I don't know what causes it.as soon as the actinics turn on and the main lights go off..he is going back to being a good boy.if you can tell me what is up with him I'd appreciate.he only does it in the afternoon and he started doing it like 2 weeks ago ..I'm really concerned that he might be stressed or something or an ilness that's burning his gills and he cannot get rid of it ?thanks for your help

reflection, hes fighting with his own image on the glass. change whatever is next to the glass, try to even put something across that side of the tank t see if it helps.

im sure its not that.for 2 months everything was fine and now all of a sudden he is scratching my tank?thats crazy to me..does he have teeth of some sort or is the rock scratching the tank when he is agitated and attacking the glass?i swear my tank is cloudy when he starts the fight with the glass ...probably from the sand.

My yellow wrasse was content for nearly a year and then for about a week straight he fought the glass. After he finished its been normal since. I also have a clown that will fight his reflection about once a month, he always goes back to normal after he gets it out of his system.

I agree with the others that your fish is fighting its own reflection
is any natural sunlight reaching your aquarium as the angle the sun hits it may have changed as the year has progressed, which could explain the sudden issue Steve

About 2-3 times a week my foxface gets really excited that a fish that looks just like him moved in next door. He can't decide if he wants to fertilize it or if he wants to jam a poison spike into it. It's sadisitically cute.

Generally fish won't see their reflection in the glass. We see it because were looking through two panes at an angle. But the fish mostly sees out. Stick your head in there and look out if you don't believe it. You might get a slight ghost reflection, but it isn't going to look like a mirror like we see looking through the front at the sides.
The thing is that the fish doesn't know the rest of the room isn't full of water. So they struggle against the glass trying to find a way out. It is usually a sign that the tank is a bit cramped for that particular specimen.

I wouldnt worry about it. Ive seen a lot of fish run into the glass. Could be the whole reflection thing. Although keep an eye on him, fish with ick will try to rub up on the glass or rocks to try to get the ick off of them. As long as he isnt covered in ick, youre probably alright.
