Making salt water in new tank

I have a brand new tank that i am setting up. There is no live stock yet. Can I make the salt water in the tank or is it recommended that I make it in another container and then transfer it to the tank? Thanks!

You can do either way. I mixed my salt right in tank when I set up mine. No issues at all. Just have some power heads running to help salt dissolve faster.

Yup, what Drew said.

Don't forget not to fill it completely up with water. Your sand and rocks will displace some of that water.

Both ways are perfectly fine.

How long do you plan on cycling your tank for?

ok lets be clear about few things here.
if tank is dry meaning dry sand and dry rock then yes u can fill it ro/di water and run the pumps and start mixing salt in sump as u go and get it up to 1.026.
but if u put live sand or live rock then u cannot fill it with ro/di water and then add salt, u will have to have saltwater ready at right salinity and temp to put in the tank.

Mixing it in the sump if you have one is the way to go, keeps any undissolved salt from collecting in dead spots in your DT

Just make sure you are using R/O water when mixing your salt. When I first started I didn't have an R/O filter and I used regular tap water. Good thing I didn't have any coral or livestock in tank because hard water from tap caused big crystal formations on bottom of sand. When I remixed in tank with R/O everything was great.

when I setup my new tank, I filled it up with ROD I water, then add the salt into the sump with a powerhead to stir it up. after I had the correct amount of water in there then I added my sand and rock. seems to work just fine for me

This is a completely dry tank. No sand or rock. I plan on cycling it for as long as it takes for the tests to read normal. Thanks for the help guys. Patiently waiting for my RODI water to be made.
