Ruby Red Scooter vs Mandarin

Is the Ruby Red less dependent on pods than a Green Mandarin? I realize they are both dragonets, but the interwebs don't have much info.

They are very similar. Ruby Red is more like a Synchiropus stellatus than a splendidus or picturatus.

Yes, they will demand pods as well, but should also be able to turn them on to pe mysis.

I have seen them fairly well tolerated by other dragonet in larger tanks, I keep my male with my male picturatus with no issue and know Paul B keeps a scooter with his pair as well. I wouldn't attempt keeping them with any other dragonet in less than a 120 gallon tank, though Steve may have some better insight into that if he happens to gander across this.

I have a 55 with a refuge. I got into saltwater because of Green Mandys, but then I was afraid of keeping one until I graduate and upgrade.

I saw this fish and was wowed and just wondering what people here thought. If I got one I still wouldn't get another pod eater. At least not yet.

I would not recommend either in a 55, I just do not see you having enough pods for them

I've never seen my red scooter eat, but he's been in my tank for 6 months!!. Some fish like mine will eat frozen food (I have no pods). I think I have just been lucky.

A 55 gallon tank isn't large enough to support such prolific pod eaters.
