Different Ways of Cycling A Tank
I just want to hear some different way on how to cycle a tank. I'm in the process of doing so right now and was just wondering some other ways of which I could have done it.

I am cycling mine now as well. I am using a shrimp and about 10 pounds of live rock.

You can also use pure ammonia. I didn't use that method because I couldn't find ammonia that didn't contain surfactant.

All of the "methods" to cycle a tank all do the same thing, they just do it more (or less) effectively. You cannot speed the process. You can spend a LOT more money, and make it seem to go faster (but usually it will not be nearly as complete and "widespread").
Just don't do it with live fish, please....

You need ammonia source, bacteria and time for them to multiply. Any source of nitrogenous waste will suffice, but as BigJohn said, please don't use a fish! The bacteria will come on their own. There are products like Biospira that claim to speed the process; never used them personally, and have heard mixed reviews. The last come from patience that you need in the hobby but most of us have a hard time learning.

so what about adding live bacteria? for example using Dr. Tim's One and Only live bacteria. People have great results and added fish within days..
what's the down side to using live bacteria to speed up the cycle? |
