Quieting Sump

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but;

I have a 90G cornerflow tank with an RS-200 sump.

The corner flow and return pump are relatively quiet, and don't bother me all that much, however, all my noise comes from the tank draining to the sump through the filter sock and hitting the sump water - any ideas on how to quiet this down?

I have my drains ~ 2" below the water surface in the sump. To avoid bubbles, I use a "T" fitting with the long part above the surface so the air can escape.

I put a piece of pvc on the return line into the sock below the water line.

Herbie overflow method for me. Absolutely quiet. Only sound is from my skimmer.

I also have an RS-200 and I just used a piece of pvc in the return line to bring it below the water level. It makes a huge difference!

Sadly, no. They are behind the skimmer where you can't see them. Think of it this way.

The "^" are the drain line coming from the DT. The ---- is the "leg" of the "T" fitting. The ___________ is the sump water level. The "o" 's are the air being released above the water.

So your tee's are above the water level.

A friend is plumbing her sump and was wondering how to quiet it down and I remembered that there was a trick to use a tee in the drain line.

Myself, I've always gone with larger diameter pipe ( 1-1/2" to 2"), with slower flow, and never seemed to have a problem with noise there.

Does much water splash out of the end of the tee that's above the water line?

Nope - not a bit. FWIW - my drains are 2 x 1 1/2 (glass-holes 1500gph), and I use an eheim 1262 that runs 2 reactors as well. I probably don't need them, but I have 0 microbubbles in the sump!

Current Tank Info: 120 mixed reef with 40b sump, RO 150 skimmer, AI Sol Blue x 2, and a 60g Frag Tank with 100g rubbermaid sump. 2 x Kessil A360w lights, BM curve 5 skimmer
