Newbie REALLY Screwed-Up on Salt, are my bacteria dead ?
While filling my new 65 gallon tank, I added too much salt. I didn't realize it because I didn't calibrate my refractometer ( I know better now). I used Life Rock (purple, with infused bacteria) and live sand. Unforutunely, I cycled for 4 weeks until I took a water sample to the store and found out it was off scale.
I have been replacing my water with Reverse Osmosis water and it's coming in range. Do you think I killed the live stuff on the rock and in the sand ? |

Don't know. What were your readings of Ammonia and Nitrites?

Many bacteria can tolerate very high salinity. Unless it was way way off, I would think you are okay but this may delay your tank cycle a bit. Once you have your salinity where it should be just follow your parameters for a couple of weeks.

For the people who asked what the salinity was.
It went for almost 5 weeks (cycling) at 1.033 |

Some of the bacteria seem to have survived, otherwise you wouldn't see nitrite or nitrate. I'd just continue as planned, and not make the same mistake when fish and corals are in the tank . You should be fine. Good luck!

I let my tank go fallow once and it say with no water movement and half the water evaporated. No telling what my salinity actually raised to. When I was ready to start it up I topped off with dechlorinated tap water and then matched salinity correctly with saltwater. Rock was fine and the tank cycled. Looks great now.
