New Liverock

Hey,

I got some new live rock along with a tank that I bought. It seems to have some sort of green algae and bubbles growing. What do you think?

Here are the bubbles. They are kind of big.

And this is the algae. I dk what type it is.

Please let me know your thoughts. Id like to set my tank up asap.

That is bubble algae. Can be a horrible nuisance if it gets established in your tank. Pick it off and maybe lightly scrub the area it was on, rinse in some salt water and you should be ok. It may likely show up in your tank at a later time, but if you keep on top of it you will be fine.

I have had tanks infested with it, yet it never came back after scrubbing all the rocks. Extremely common

Thanks for the reply James. Should I pressure wash it?
Also, what about the red/purple algae. Is it bad? Should I just toss the rock and get new ones. lol

Also, what did you scrub your rock with?

No need to pressure wash ....even picking it off would be fine. If you brushed the area, a cheap toothbrush would be fine.

When I scrubbed my rocks....the whole tank was literally covered in it....my fault for not getting on top of it sooner. When I say infested, I mean thousands of bubbles. I have no seen it since I scrubbed the rock....maybe 7 years ago? Keep the rock....even if you had bubble free rocks, it would most likely come in on a coral or be on any new rock. Very, very common algae. Very easy to control, and there are some animals that eat it. But you just have a couple bubbles, I would not worry. I'd rather it than aiptasia or red planaria(flatworoms).

You want the purple algae.....that is coralline. It is a calcerous algae that it very desirable, but it still can be a pain when it encrusts everything, especially plastics. The red algae.... some of it looks like sponges of some sort. Scrub off if it doubt ....but the rock(aside from the bubble algae) looks decent actually. Your tank will go through all sorts of algae blooms once you set up anyways, it is a PITA but part of it.

No problem

The biggest thing is keeping an eye on the tank and getting right on anything you see....like bubble algae, or aiptasia. Them infesting or taking over tanks takes months, not days.

Now when I see any potential pest, I get rid of it immediately.
