To DSB or not to DSB?

Hello everyone. Im new to the RC and fairly new to saltwater in general. Of course I've been researching my *** off like every newbie, knowledge is power!!! My first question that I can't seem to find an answer to is the sand bed. How deep? How does it work "properly"? And what is the best way to maintain it?

The tank is a 180g bowfront pre-drilled with DIY 40g sump. The tank will be a reef and fish mix. Thanks in advance.
