Exclamation Wrasse stuck in overflow section

So my six line decided to take a plunge right into the overflow section of my 90G tank.

With PVC's leading to the sump, there is absolutely no room for me to even get my hand int there to do anything. It's impossible for him to come back out because he would have to jump over the lip.

How in God's name am I supposed to get this little guy out? And if he dies, how can I get him out to ensure no damage to the tank?

If you pull out the stand pipe, will he go down the drain to the sump, where you can place a net?

If I pull that out, all the water in the overflow section is going to flow through the hole, and without a pipe to direct it into the sump, will flood the entire stand/floor.

I have filled my overflow slowly with sand. eventually it gets high enough to scoop the fish out. Afterwards I syphon the sand back out.

No bulkhead on the bottom of the overflow for the standpipe to fit into? Usually there's a bulkhead and a hose to the sump. Or a pipe from the BH to the sump.

Is everything glued together, or can you take apart the standpipes?

If he's on the small side, you could try to get a wide piece of tubing and siphon him out. Just be careful not to siphon all of the water out with him left in there, although I guess the box would just start to fill back up in a few seconds anyway.

I might've misspoke.

There is a bulkhead underneath the tank from the pipe to a hose to the sump.

If I remove the pipe in the overflow section, the water would then just go through the hole into the hose to the sump, correct?

Can you put a bottle trap in on a string?

That is correct. You issue is the exact reason I don't run a Durso. Fish would get stuck in the overflow. My tank is build in so overflow noise isn't an issue and the way my sump is setup, micro bubbles aren't an issue either. Now if and when a fish makes into my overflow, I find them in my filter socks and put them back in the tank where they belong. My six line as notorious for this and did it several times until he learned to stay away from the overflow. He's the one that prompted me to permanently remove my Durso. I guess he didn't like Mr. Toads Wild Ride when he went over the chute.

Just be sure your sump can handle the additional volume - the water in the overflow box doesn't generally make it to the sump. If you think it doesn't have the capacity to hold the additional water, remove some from the sump in advance of doing this. You should have an air break in the returns so the tank doesn't drain further than the weirs of the overflow.

Good luck what ever course you choose.
