Starter - Eheim Scubacube 165.

Dear all,

If I may, for all of you I'm Ryan, I'm from Gibraltar. I have decided to move from freshwater to the magnificent saltwater hobbie (I hear hooray's in the background). I have bought the Eheim Scubacube 165 marine aquarium. I need your advice and I will post further updates as I go along...

To start off I have bought a second hand skimmer which has only been used for 4 months and also a second hand wave maker. They are in good working order as they are from a family friend and I know he has taken care of them here are pictures of them...

I need some assistance with what I will need to place inside my sump apart from the heater and skimmer. My intentions are to buy a heater obviously, a 7kg bucket of Red Sea Salt, 5kgs of live sand, and roughly 10kgs of live rock and 10kgs of dead rock for the cycling period. I am also going to place live copepods in the tank to speed up the cycle ( if recommended ), I also need a return pump, can someone please recommend how many LPH should my return pump do ?

Here is an image of my sump just to give you an idea...

In the compartment where the egg crate plastic is, my intention is to place filter floss and simple filter sponge. Please give me your views on this...

I also want to take this opportunity to ask you all, "what would you do?"
I have ideas exploding everywhere by many people... Some say make it a breeding tank, some say make it a fish and rock only and get some aggressive fish and some say make it a community tank with some corals... please give me ideas...

How is the display and sump plumbed together? Overflow?

I'd just get it running w/ LR and sand first. You could use an eheim 1250 or 60 for return. Figure out later where to setup skimmer. First be sure the sump will fit into the cabinet.
Throw in a couple of pieces of shrimp to start the cycle, it should take a couple of months.
If it has the 96w of t5 lighting, you could start w/ LPS or soft corals, w/ 44g you will be limited on fish size and #s.
You have a very neat looking tank, well built I would imagine. We do not see these in the states.

Yep. If you read the specs for more its the Eheim Scubacube 165.

Hi, The sump fits perfectly into the cabinate its actually made to measure the original cost of this tank with the sump is over £1200 which is approx I'd say $2500.

Today I have started the cycle going with just Live Sand, tomorrow I will be buying 16KGS of Fiji premium Live Rock.

Which bulbs do you want to use? I'd like to see it in action, down the road a bit. It should be a very clean and stylish looking tank, good luck.

We have instant Live Sand in

The Water moving in.

Sump... (eye sore but will get better pictures today.

Very nice start!. I would put a sponge in between the two pieces of egg crate. www.swisstropicals.com should have the cross sectional size you need, then just cut it to length. You might even be able to sandwich a bag of chemipure in there as well.

Oh, and if it was me, I would set it up as a dedicated SPS tank with a few rare showcase fish. Maybe Helfrich or purple firefish and some clown gobies?

Nice start. I really think you should get a fish that hovers in open water over the rocks.

As you know I am totally new to this. I intend to add fish in about 3/4 weeks however what fish would you recommend which hover in open water? my favorite fish are angels, tangs and clowns.

by the way I have tested PH and its pretty high. 8.8 do you think I should add some peat in the sump maybe? also, ammonia 0.3mg.
