Refugium Setup

I have been researching the setup for refugiums and have seen differing opinions on it. My refugium currently has 4" of live sand, live rock rubble and a ball of chaeto. My question is should I keep the rubble or get rid of it? I have read differing statements about whether it helps or causes more problems.

Tank details:
46 gallon bowfront with 75ish lbs of Live Rock, 40 Lbs of Live sand, Aqua Maxx Hob Skimmer, CPR HOB Refugium (2.5 gallons), 2 clowns, Green Brittle Star, CUC (snails, Shrimp and crabs).

It can accumulate detritus, so depending on the load in the tank it will have to be cleaned every so often. But can be very beneficial. I run mine on a SPS tank post skimmer and floss in the pump box (big box) so it stays pretty clean. Provides a lot of nitrification and denitrification bacterial growth.
