You should go with a 20g tall for your sump. Wait until Petco has their $ gal sale again and you get it for $20
Quality heater, 65gal or more skimmer, 750gal return pump can go higher but this works well. Quality lighting if you are going to do a reef, 36" HO T5 4 bulb would work fine or you can go with LED's. The cheap Chinese imports on Ebay for $83 shipped work well Digital thermometer, and at least one better with two power heads. I'd do at least 50lbs of sand and 45-60 lbs of live rock for the main tank and another 15 or so in the sump. This increases your bio load I'm sure I'm leaving out a few things necessary because I'm doing this and cooking lunch I have this same setup.

I don't have a sump but good that you are getting it.
I had 40 #s of sand and rock but added20 #s of sand. I would do 60 #s sand 40-50 #s rock. I have 3 phs on it. Two koralias at 425 and 1 at 240. They are fine and cheap. Depends on what you plan on keeping. If I did it over I may have done one 850 and one 425. I don't love the light I have it's an orbit marine led 1st generation light. It's whatever. I have an EShopps hob skimmer rated for 75g. They have an in sump version. I am pleased with it. You can find used skimmers on here and save some money.

OH I almost forgot, my skimmer is a HOB which gives me more room in the sump, something to think about. It works great.

Awesome thanks gives me so many things to think about. Did you all cut holes in the back of the tank or did you just do the hang off the back overflow? If you cut what size did you use and what kind of overflow?

No, get an overflow box and cut for 1" pvc I forget the size it's like 1.033" but they make a special drill hole saw for drilling for 1" pvc

box is close I found it easier to put the bulkheads in with W 8" x H 5" x D 5" just easier to get hands in. I don't silicone my bulkheads just let the rubber gasket seal it. I also only make them hand tight, never had a leak. My old box was 7x4x4 just too tight.

Any size box works just make sure to get the right bulkheads. Are you doing BeAnAnimals overflow or herbie overflow?

Research research research before you buy or do anything. I would recommend a 20 long sump instead of a 20tall you will have more area for equipment then a 20tall. Check out glass-holes.com for your overflow and return.

I wasn't trying to say you wouldn't have room, I was just trying to convey that a 20 long would have a little more room for equipment then a 20 tall.

Yea I love my 20 long sump. I couldn't do my current setup if i baught a 20 high. 20 high would be good for like no external ATO container, or more space for like dry equipment like external pump or storing additives and what not.
