Brown banded Bamboo shark
So im setting my 300 gallon stock tank up for a small brown banded bamboo.... sump is 50 gallons...... i have 100 lbs of rock right now but how much more should i get?..... he is going to be the only fish in the set up with some damsels i will put in after the cycling period to help establish the tank..... also how long should i wait after i cycle the tank since sharks like to be in established tanks

Well I've never had a shark tank but I have researched it. I think most people go with a minimalist approach since those sharks spend most of there time on the sand, so the more space to swim the better. Secondly, since you don't have many posts here ( no offense), and you posted in new to the hobby, is this your first salt water tank?

U can keep more rock in the sump duh!... can someone who has kept sharks please give me some advice.......... my post count shouldnt matter i have enough experience or i wouldnt be going this route..... seeing how u joined this site after me and only have 362 posts doesnt even give u the right to ask that question..... this is my first saltwater tank yes but ive had tanks and kept exotic fish for years so i know what im doing ....
U cant go by post counts there are many people who troll and have no good advice but just post random things.... I could go by the usual 1-1.5 lbs per gallon but thats usually with more stock, wanted to still make sure since sharks produce a huge bioload.... im asking those with experience.......not a newb calling me out on my post count Dont mean to sound rude but u were asking for it Last edited by Sandnukka15; 09/13/2015 at 10:08 PM. |

Ok smarty mc smarty pants. My previous post wasn't pessimistic as you took it. Keeping exotic freshwater fish doesn't transfer to saltwater. Sorry, but it just doesn't. Yes, I pointed out your post count, and the fact you posted this in the new to the hobby forum. Someone new to the hobby usually doesn't take their first crack at saltwater with a shark. I was simply trying to help(in the context that your lack of information, low post count, and the fact that your asking about a shark tank in a new to the hobby forum). Best of luck to you.
Edit: Just to make sure since this is your first salty tank. I'm sure your original question is important, but I'll have to add. Do you have a refractometer, calibration fluid, ro/di, reliable test kits, etc? Last edited by stingeragent; 09/13/2015 at 10:16 PM. |

Is 300 big enough for that? I thought they needed 500 bare minimum.

Min recommended by most sellers is 360, although I've seen them in 125's. They get over 3' so it's really an ethical choice after that.

In a way it does it keeps you on track of water perams and water changes giving u a head start in the saltwater world.... most people that tend to come into salt come off keepimg easy fresh water fish or no fish at all.... in return have a lot to learn...... when u keep exotic fish u tend to learn a lot about the hobby thru the years including saltwater .... at least i did...... im more experienced then most that first start saltwater hobby and i have no doubt in my mind i know what im doing.... i have everything set in place just wanted a couple experienced peoples opinions on how many lbs of live rock they use per gallon for their sharks
U have posted multiple times throughout the new hobby section with useless comments....... arent u newb urself?.....trying to get that post count up? |

Yes. I'm a noob. Started my first salty tank about a year and a half ago. Have upgraded that one to a larger size, and also added a separate one. I'll still be a noob 10 years from now. There are folks on this forum that have had a saltwater tank running since the 70's, or 80's. I will always be a noob to them and I'm not ashamed of that. I try and learn something new about this hobby everyday. I also try and do my own thing from time to time (getting rid of my sump and running a canister filter instead), and seeing how it goes. But you gotta draw the line somewhere. I wouldn't consider the majority of my comments useless. I try and help when I can. I even give advice that I myself don't do but should (do as I say, and not as I do). I look at the newbie forums every day, several times a day, and I will continue to do so even 10 years from now. Something I learned, may help someone in the future, or it may not, but at least it's a start. You really took me all wrong in my first post. If I didn't say what I did, someone else would have shortly after because the dedicated members of this board care about the life that goes into our tanks, and I'm betting there's not a single member here that would recommend a shark tank as a first saltwater tank no matter how much freshwater experience you have. I'm sure your experience in that aspect will be of value, but you are in a different playing field now. I can top off my freshwater tank ( I have 3) with tap no problem. Do that same thing in a salty tank, problem. You also have to consider salinity, flow, filtration, and numerous other things that can quickly spell disaster in a saltwater tank especially with a shark.

Im sorry ive had a bad day and i was really hoping to just get some experienced opinions is all
I have 6 other tanks most in the 200 gallon range ..... i realize all that goes into a shark tank ... there just seems to be a lot of people that automatically jump to the conclusion that if its ur first saltwater tank then u will obviously fail if its for a shark...... ive done my research for years and ive read a lot... im goimg to make a thread later this year to show the progression of the tank and shark. Maybe then people will stop automatically assuming someone cant have their first tank as a shark tank Id say 95% of people shouldnt as their first tank but im the 5%.... i have all the equipment the right size tank for a small brown banded and everything in check.... i just have to wait for the tank to cycle and then wait a little longer to make sure its well established Last edited by Sandnukka15; 09/13/2015 at 10:38 PM. |

Here. I'll help you out, although since you already know everything I'm not sure why you posted in the first place. With 100lbs of LR, a shark and a few damsels, you could get by with less rock.

My troll-dar is pretty sharp. If I'm being generous, I think this might be one of those aspirational tanks, not something that's getting bought next week. Either way I think it bears mention that where I'm from "nukka" is a version of another word that starts with N and won't get past the profanity filter. So OP's screen name is kind of a red flag.
Anyway, I only know enough about sharks to know they're out of my league so I'll be unsubscribing from this thread.

So this thread could have went better. As far as you are asking about the rock. I wouldnt go lower than 1lb per gallon. That being said I do believe 300 to be low and even on a growout tank its kind of cramped and will add stress to the animal. I have a buddy who is growing out a bamboo shark in a 4500 gallon system. Only thing in there other than some feeder fish. Also even if you have tons of experience with tough-to-keep fresh water species I wouldnt go all in on an "expert only" first saltwater setup.
But seeing how determine you sound I doubt you will hear these cries. I just hope you take it slow and allow a few months for the tank to establish.
