Looking to add another Protein SKimmer to a 1000 Gallon Tank
Hey guys....I have a 1000 Gallon tank with an Aqua C EV-1000 which works fairly well now that I have totally ignored all manufacturer suggestions on water level. I also had to replace the pump on it to get the proper flow/bubbling.
Given that my tank is all predator sharks/rays and schools of mono's, lookdowns and trevally. I want to supplement this skimmer and looking for suggestions. Looking for a skimmer rated for 500 gallons roughly. I see Reef Octopus is highly reccomended so I am looking at an Elite 220, but wondering what other brands/options you guys may know or rate highly. I am browsing other options on marine depot now. |

why not get a larger skimmer and only run 1-if you feel that skimmer is not doing the job. Maybe a MTC/MRC venturi or orca reeflo. Or Lifereef skimmer many ppl run just one skimmer on tanks that size with good success.
Or you could go with a large needlewheel skimmer. Corey |

You might want to contact AquaC and see if they can build an extension to make your EV 1000 taller.

Thanks guys I have already done that and Jason called me back yesterday helping to trouble shoot. We are trying a few things right now and sending him pictures. I do agree contact time is key but the problem is/was the skimmate was collecting in the neck not the cup.

Mag 24 (thinking of upgrading to a Iwaki/Panworld after some expirements)
I have to have the water level 1/2 way up the tower in order to consistently get skimmate. I am changing a few things now to see if they will help and moving the water level. |

Mag 24? I'm shocked Jason missed that. That is the recommended pump for a EV 400. I used to run one on mine and it had a magnificent performance. I ran this skimmer with water level 1" below the top of the box. When I had a EV 1000 I used a mag 36. It was a much more powerful pump. It is still by far the best performing skimmer I have ever owned. I ran this skimmer with water level 1" below the top of the box. From what I have seen, most people who have poor performance from an AquaC EV series skimmer they all share the same problem. They either went for the smallest recommended pump or they went even smaller. If I was going with a EV 1000 today, I would choose the eco-tech Vectra L1. Much less wattage then the Iwaki and I would bet better performance than any of the recommended pumps for that skimmer

Yes believe it or not Jason missed it and even said he had several customers running the ev1000 with Mag24 successfully. Part of the issue was I had some added back pressure from an elbow on the drain to minimize splashing(removing this has helped), but Jason and I had also discussed that if it did not start producing adequately that I should switch to an external pump such as panworld or iwaki.
I agree on the recommended pumps being to small and should not even be recommended to begin with. I opted for the internal version for simplicity and space, but realize that is no longer going to be adequate. |

I will restate again. An internal pump like the Vectra L1 or the Deepwater BLDC 15 should perform really well and be a quieter and more efficient choices than the recommended pumps. Plus they can be run external or internal.

From the owners manual
As of our last printing, the Iwaki 70 RLT is our favorite pump on the EV-1000 skimmer. If you choose to use a submersible pump, we like the Mag Drive 24 on this skimmer. Smaller pumps will not drive the skimmer properly. Other external pumps with a flow curve similar to the Iwaki 70 RLT should produce excellent results. http://www.proteinskimmer.com/User's%20Manuals/EV-1000.pdf I am wondering if that vectra will be as good as a panworld/iwaki given the head pressure? I certainly like the idea of it and already added it to cart hahaha. Thanks Greg |

Ok thanks! I am right now leaning toward the Panworld 200PS mounted externally with a bulkhead supplying water direct from my sump. I may leave the skimmer body in the sump possibly or remove it and use the area for a refugium area.

Greg gcarroll was 100% correct
I upgraded to the panworld 250ps and it works!!!!!! Actually if you are not running the pump to anything else I would get the next size down Panworld as I had to valve it back slightly (but going to plumb the outer outlet to some filter socks tonight after rearranging my sump last night. So the skimmer pulled all kinds of nasty crap out to start with while adjusting it. Mainly junk I had stirred up from my sump. Right now I am trying to fine tune the skimmate but amazed at the difference between the crappy mag24 to panworld! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7MLzcWKbQg |

You may be valving it back now, but as it catches up with your system (since it previously wasn't operating at it's full potential) you may find the need to open it up. Glad you are happy with your purchase. Happy reefing!
