Nova - Creatures Of Light
so i happened to catch this episode of Nova tonight. some really excellent reef eye candy, and some awesome information about the use of bioluminescence and biofluorescence. especially the fluorescent proteins from corals.
fair warning my ad block on chrome and firefox messed up the pbs site something fierce. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/...res-light.html enjoy.

I would like to mention that there is a great vacation spot with an excellent natural wonder that highlights this. The island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico has a "bio bay" with massive concentrations of bioluminescent bacteria.
I went there a few years back and went on a tour of the bay. It was incredible. The boat engine wakes churned bright green. As the boat passed over a school of fish it was like watching an underwater meteor shower. When we got in the water if you raised your hand up through the surface you got to see it outlined with glowing green dots dripping all down your hand and arm. It was very surreal. And I was very impressed by how much importance the locals placed upon preserving the bay. You could not go in the water if you had suncreen or bugspray on. The boat used electric motors. You could tell how important it was for them. And just in general the island was really fun. There were wild horses running around. Good food, good local beer, good snorkeling. I highly recommend it for those with our passions.

I really enjoyed the show. wish some of those corals were easy to keep in our tanks.
