Dyi 40b sump instructions?

Would like to build a sump from a 40g breeder using Home Depot glass for baffles. Looking for baffle measurements and placements?

Edit: found a build thread, now just wondering if it's the effort to save a few bucks

I built my sump from a 40G breeder as well. As far as i know home depot only carries 1/8" thick glass.. I wouldn't use this based on the force of the water, but mostly because of how razor sharp it seems to be!!! And there's no way to avoid never touching the glass when you're doing anything in the sump.

I ordered custom cut glass for mine and my sump is working very well. I used 1/4" glass with a ground radius on the edge from an online vendor but I'm sure, depending on your location, you could find it local for cheaper. https://www.onedayglass.com/

I used 17 5/16" x 12" for the refugium section and 17 5/16 x 9 1/2" for the 3 bubble traps on the skimmer section. My sump has the return pump section in the middle and is based off the Model F sump and adjusted for only being 36" long.

The baffle placement will depend on your equipment but I can get you a picture and measurements later if that will help.

I did the 40b DIY sump project, I wouldn't do it again.

First off, Lowes cut the glass a little too big even though I gave them exact measurements. That means I had to go buy a glass cutting tool to take off another 1/8", which is difficult to do!

I also bought some sandpaper and spent considerable time trying to get the edges smooth but after installation I ended up cutting myself on the still sharp edge, which led to a small infection.

Finally, even with the baffles in place you have to deal with how to hold the filter socks which is an additional expense.

I'm about to make another 40b sump but this time I think I'll get the precut kit from ebay, which includes the correct size baffles and filter sock holder for $90.

Thanks that's what I was curious about.

Not really a big deal, you can install the glass at an angle as long as they fit edge to edge.

Isn't home depot glass 1/8" anyway? I usually pay extra and have 1/4" glass made with fully finished edges.

Also there are lots of filtration sock holders not too expensive. Making your own sump is really the only way to go.

$90 is not too bad for the glass and the filter sock holder.

I used Lowes glass in my 40b sump. I know it's not ideal but I just sanded the edges that were on top because they are razor sharp. As far as getting it cut they cut mine spot on so I didn't have to re cut thankfully. If I had the extra time and money I might have ordered it but $20 for glass and no waiting on shipping sounded better at the time.

Find a local glass shop. I got 1/4 glass with finished edges for $30 from a local glass shop.
