Can someone ID this red macro algae?
I have a rock that had some red macro algae on it. I've tried multiple times to get a good picture, but the photos always turn out terrible.
It looks just like a very dark red feather (central 'spine' with feathered branches coming off of it) and the tips of the 'feathers' glow bright orange under the UV lights. The nearest algae I could find that has a similar growth pattern was haliptlon sp., but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere that the new growth/tips fluoresce. The other red macros that are listed as having a fluorescence effect look like a very different growth pattern. You'll have to use your imagination here, but imagine that these are dark red feathers with bright orange tips. This is actually 4 distinct 'stalks' of it growing together. |

I may have to just pull the rock out and take a photo, it's impossible to get anything detailed where it's currently located. |
