Water storage containers

I'm getting ready to set up a new system and am looking for the best solution for a RODI and saltwater storage containers. I'm looking at one approximately 25 gallon container (horizontal if possible) and one 55 gallon container. I want to make sure I purchase something that is safe for a reef tank and potentially already has a bulkhead installed (although I can easily do that as well).

Although not horizontal, there's always Brute trash cans. They're reef safe and proven many times over to be good RODI and saltwater storage containers by many reefers. If you don't like those, then I'd look at rotamold containers. They're pricier though, and if you don't want to get ripped off on shipping, you'll have to find somewhere local you can pick them up from. Ace hardware, I believe, has some locally.

I personally like my brute cans as they are very easy to clean when needed. They are also relatively cheap. I got (2) 44 gallon ones for my mixing station for around $80 at Home Depot. Plus the dark plastic blocks light. Though I don't know that that really matters with RODI or new SW as there shouldn't be any organics to grow in it.

Its funny - I use one large brute today and have debated just getting a second and plumbing them together. I was thinking about a horizontal tank because I want to set up an ATO station but my pump has a limit of 7'. Since my water room is below the tank room, I may mount the ATO tank up near the ceiling and feed it with my RODI directly. Then a small line through the ceiling right to the sum should work. I need to test this theory out this weekend.

I will check them out. I'm definitely worried about shipping on these containers. A buddy ordered his tanks and I was shocked at how much he spent all in.

Look up the "Ace Roto Mold Vertical Containers" on the Rural King website.

I think that would work well. I've debated doing this before myself, but haven't since I mix kalk in my topoff water and it would be inconvenient to have to pull the tank down to add kalk.

A safe way to do this without the risk of plumbing your rodi directly to your ATO would be to have a line from your rodi go to the high-mounted reservoir, and just keep a valve on the line so you can manually turn on/off the filling of the top off reservoir. That and a float switch, and you can just turn the rodi valve once you're starting to run low on top off water, and close it later in the day so you don't have to worry about an accidental over filling of your tank.

HAHA That's hilarious! To be honest I am not sure, I THINK it came from a Yeti knock off cup.

This!

I picked up two for my water station and I know the 45 gallon ones have free shipping. They are built really well and have 3/4" threaded bulkhead installed already.

I quoted the 55 vertical container, shipping was crazy high. I had to pay I think $12 to ship this container, typically anything over $100 will ship for free. Look at the 65 gallon for free shipping, if they still offer it!

That goat sticker is from Backcountry dot com.

The Brute trash cans are safe? They're not treated with fungicide?

Brute cans are reef "safe" but what has been proven is that they leech some really, really nasty stuff into the water that causes chromosomal changes in fish. Yes lots of people use them but no one, literally no one that does any kind of breeding. Not successfully anyway. That being said PVC is also really nasty and not great to use either so grain of salt I guess.

Rubbermaid does make a white brute can that is safe for portable water and to store human food in. Those are safe. I used "shipping barrels". They are blue and are FDA rated to store potable water in. They can usually be found online for really cheap. I have two and they work out great. They are the barrels used to store Walter White's money at the end of Breaking Bad.

Just curious how much water is left that isn't able to drain out of the bulkhead?

I'm probably gonna use 55 gallon blue water barrels and drill in the bottom.

Its a good point about the kalk. I use the tunze osmolator and the calcium dispenser which is in line with the top off hose and it would be a hassle filling but still, I like the idea of never needing to worry about refilling my ATO container. I plan on hooking the RODI in the ATO container to a float valve so it will shut off automatically.

This could be prefect - exactly what I was looking for. Do they ship for free?

I am currently using a grey brute can. I hope that I'm not poisoning my tank...
