Crackling from tank

So the lights are dimming in my tank and I hear 5-6 crackles in rapid succession, my first thought is a mantis shrimp but I just bought this rock today and set the tank up today. Tank is pretty much stagnant and very murky due to the sand and I can't see very well. Is this a mantis? I don't want to scape the rocks tomorrow and get sucker punched in the finger!

Can you give us a bunch of details on your tank? Also, crackling can come from electricity so be careful.

It's a 40 breeder, I just set it up today got all the water, 34 pounds of rock, 80 pounds of sand. I find it unlikely to be an electrical as the power strip where everything connected is below the stand, the sound came above and inside the tank. The one BIG rock that is still emersed in clouds and invisible is the one I think it's in.

I will say I bought my 90g set up used with black box LED lighting. In the past I always had metal halide lights, never LED. For a couple months I would hear some 'popping' that made me wonder WTH, especially when I turned them down in the evening... after some time I came to realize it was the lighting when I made adjustments, maybe with the changes or heat? I verified it with hours of repeated turning them up and down and waiting. It was the lights, harmless (I hope)

If it is somehow electrical (I don't believe it is) what should I do?

There's also only two plugs connected and it's the lights, both haven't made contact with the water in any way

my suggestion would be to leave the tank dark for 24 hours and see if you still hear it... if you dont (meaning unplug the light from the wall) that would at least rule out the lights.

Yes. This sounds like a surge protector. Cut the breaker and feel the surge protector and I can almost put my money on it it will be incredibly warm. If so water got in to and get rid of it (out of house) immediately.

I just unplugged everything, I felt the power strip and it was just normal temp, I felt the cords and stuff and nothing is hot. I'm sort of confused but still a little unnerved

OH MY LORD HAHAHAH So my birthday was today and one of the balloons got stuck in my fan and I cut it off with part of the string still in it!!! It's been hitting the fan and creating the little pops. Oh my god such a little mistake that had me worried sick! Everything is all good nothing is wrong in the tank, thanks for the help though!!

I'm glad it wasn't anything serious. It's amazing how a sound like that could be heard as something different.

LOL what a great thread. Very good that it wasn't anything serious, electricity and our tanks are nothing to joke around with. Funny conclusion to the mystery though that is for sure.

We've got to laugh at ourselves when silly things happen.
