Fish suicide

Has anyone ever had a Mandarin fish jump out of the tank? came down to a dead fish on the floor. I know fish can jump out but didn't think such a slow moving docile fish would. Apparently I am wrong.

Had the same thing happen to me. Had a mandy doing very well, fat, happy, and growing very nicely. Even got it to eat pellets. Came home from work one day to find a dried up mandy on my floor. I always put my screen top on, but fed the corals that morning and forgot.

I had a manderin jump out of a 1" x 3" slot in the hood. Only place he could've jumped out. He was hard and dry when my wife found him.. :-(

It wasn't suicide, it was poor husbandry on the part of the tank owner. Nearly all fish are potential jumpers, it's there natural means of escaping a threat and they do it when they are being bullied by another fish or are suddenly frightened. Expect to continue to kill fish until you put a screen or other type of cover over your tank. I know a screen detracts from the nice clean look of your open tank but it looks a lot better than dead fish on the floor.

Well that's one opinion but I have never had a fish jump out in ten years until now

That’s pretty harsh. I’ve had fish jump out for no apparent reason. I once found my hawk fish dried up on the floor and he certainly was not being picked at and was not easily startled. However, I’ll agree with the screen top. I’ve lost several fish that decided to carpet surf and I’ll never NOT have a screen top on my tank. Plus it’s super easy and cheap to make with some screen material from Home Depot and some pond netting. I don’t think it detracts very much if at all from the look of my tank. I made sure the screen material matched my tank, stand, equipment so it’s not this hideous eye sore or anything.

it comes down to good husbandry.....thoughtful planning as to the actual animals you will be keeping in you aquariums....most of you have too shallow a display and impulse purchase inhabitants.
dont take that the wrong way, please....i took me years to figure out to downsize and go species specific...
i only own a pair of gobies. in a vase that is only 9-1/2 inches wide... they are black rays, s. nematodes, about 4 inches long... no lid. ever. they dive for the sandbed when 'threatened'....or she does, 'he' lives in the sand bed and i see him about twice a year....although gobies are notorious jumpers... 'him & her' rarely feel threatened by other fish, because there aren't any. this is a species only designed display. with intention and purpose...i created overhangs to dissuade jumping and it worked. i developed a dsb for them and their shrimp. artificial and natural tunneling enforces security.
your fish are jumping out because.....they are insecure and unhappy...sorry but caging is just a bandaid...understanding the husbandry of the species you are keeping will keep them happy and secure.it requires planning...impulse purchases are mostly doomed...
and in my honest opinion, jumping mandies are leaving the desert wastelands you provide, for better rock pools. unfortunately, they dont understand they are in an aquarium and not a fished out foodless rockpool.....
this reality of our hobby is rarely addressed here.... sorry if i sound offensive, not meant to... just taking the opportunity to add my 2 cents worth

No you don't sound offensive but I think he was depressed I knew I should of got him counselling weeks back! Look out for the signs everybody it's always the quiet ones!

I'm always surprised at how fast my picturatus can move when he's attacking his reflection since most of the time he's like a slow moving hovercraft patrolling his desert wasteland. I'm really glad I found this thread because now I know that my husbandry sucks.

I lost one fish to jumping. I dont have a cover and doubt I will get one. I also am having sushi for lunch.

My Spotted Dragonet can move when he wants to. With pods it's hunt and peck, but when I feed brine shrimp to the tank he will go after them like the rest.
