Bleaching, dying.....

Thats not to say there isn't white coraline. Coraline comes in almost every color!

I had wonder this as well since I had gotten some snails which had some really nice pink coralline on their shells. Over a few weeks I could not understand why some of them it was turning all white on their shells -- my water parameters were all good.

Well, it turned out that they would crawl along this water return pump to eat the algae....while at the same time exposing the coralline (on the shells) to the open-air as well as the intense light coming from the LED. Anway, both factors contributed to the nice pink coralline turning to white within a few weeks. They call it "light-shock" and bleached coralline.

My hermit crab shell had a very nice pink coraline growing on it and now it is turning white. So if by chance it is dieing what would cause it to die?

+1 One of my snails crawled to edge of water. The shell got a little dry it turned bright pink / white.

It’s a good point to note.

I have my tank for 2 years, and went thru the normal stuff. From algae blooms to cyano.

But since the mid-stages, coraline always grew everywhere. From the back of the tank to the shells of my snails, rocks, even the glass scrapper is full of coraline, from white to entirely purple.

But I’m noticing the coraline to bleach.

I think I reached the limit of nutrients - specially magnesium - on the regular water changes.

I have a few corals, The “begginer” ones and they’re growing so far...

For a few months, my water was over on salinity - 1.030 ~ 1.032 but the whole ecosystem was OK.

I fixed the salinity level, but the MG level was quite low time after time (I don’t recall the value now).

I bought a MG solution - and started dosing manually, which gave back a little for the Coraline in about a month or so...

Well, basically I think I’m about to reach the “next level” which I’ll need to start dosing, not only MG, but also CA and other trace elements.

So, my question is: what’s the best approach on start dosing?

Should I buy some equipment? I don’t have sump, neither skimmer, so what are the best options?

Here’s a pic of my 55G tank.

Ps. If your coraline is bleaching, the main reason is Magnesium. Check the MG levels and dose it. I bought the ESV B-Ioninc Magnesium and added to the water. Check the salinity as well while dosing, because it will raise the levels.
