Red macro thriving - Chaeto dying
Why? its a new tank btw. Using RO/DI water. Chaeto turning to mush while red pom looking bad and pretty.
Is it perhaps its fighting for nutrient? |

I'll let some others reply but I just put some macro algae in my reactor to try and reduce my high phosphates along with GFO. My nitrates are under 10. I guess what other people will ask is what are your parameter readings?

Bad and pretty?..
A new tank is pretty sterile and may lack sufficient nutrients but algaea also require light of specific amounts so it could be related to lighting as well as nutrient loads...

Ok thats what I ascertained you ment. I have no luck with chaeto. Nitrate 4, PO4 .07
My red macros grow great in my fuge. So does ulva which sits on the surface. What little chaeto I do have does not grow. Now, it could be just the competition. But when it was the only thing it just would not grow.

brs On their Uvm tank trials had a problem with Chaeto dying when added st the beginning. They recommend having a boil load to deal with before adding it.

I have chaeto, grape caulerpa and feather caulerpa in my sump. the two caulerpas grow like crazy and chaeto is about the same size as it was a year ago. Doesn't die, but doesn't grow. My guess is the other algae out competes the chaeto.
