I just heard from a very experienced reefer that rios tend to expire faster and leak chemicals into the tank, I have always used rios and have had no problem with them. So whats the deal? Do I now need to replace all my rios with something else?
Please any feedback would help out a lot! ~Chase

I would replace any Rios you have immediatly...... If you do a search on RC on Rios you will find many horror stories about these pumps/powerheads......

Maxi Jets all the way..... Most folks on RC swear on them..... They are also very inexpensive to purchase.....
Try a search on Powerheads to confirm..... Have fun,,,,, ![]() |

Yep if the RIO's are used for powerheads (extra flow) replace them with MaxiJets.
![]() Funny story ----> The other day I needed to siphon gas out of my car, but alas the height difference wasn't enough to get a good siphon going........I used the old RIO to pump it out (going through the fuel pump access inside the car). After I got done I realized that was THE MOST STUPID THING I could have done!!! I coulda went up in flames! Damn Rios.... ![]() ee |

I have never had a problem with my Rio's, or my Rio Hyperflow, or my Seios... Guess I am just lucky.

A few years ago the horror stories about the rios freezing up and melting inside tanks and causing all sorts of fish and coral deaths was fairly common, but lately any "new stories are far and few between. Maybe because there are alot of good strong powerheads being made, or maybe they have corrected the problems????
Of the approx. 7-8 rio powerheads I've used, I had two of them stop working and wouldn't start untill you banged it on something hard. As sson as they did that, they were used for mixing salt only. I use the Seio powerhead and I have never heard anything bad about them.

I just read a thread about a guy getting zapped by his rio 3100, so maybe the legacy continues.

The sieo's are oil-less compared to the other rios. The only problem I heard with the sieos are that they sometimes don't restart.

I believe the Hyperflows are also oil-less. Never had a problem with any of mine. Keep in mind though that powerheads are not designed to last forever. They need to be rotated out just like light bulbs and everything else. Granted they should last a long time, but if your tank is full of five year old pumps that have never been cleaned, you are probably living on borrowed time.

I have only 1 Seio and not a problem. I shut it off when feeding and doing water changes and no problems so far. We'll see.....

The only problems I have with seio's is the weird mounting, and you CAN'T use them with a wavemaker. I didn't know that until after I bought them.
