What is a closed loop?

What is it and what are the benefits? I read that they replace the need for powerheads?? If so, is it more expensive? How does it work? How hard are they do setup? Thanks

It is essentially a single pump (larger than a power head) that is usually plumbed outside the tank. It takes water directly from the main display and pumps it back into the main display adding more flow. It is common to have multiple outputs back into the tank. it is also common to see the outputs "switched" via a SCWD or oceans Motion device.
