Candy Cane Coral

I just picked up a good sized (15 mouths) Candy Candy Coral from my LFS yesterday. My understanding is that they are pretty easy to take care of.

It hasn't opened yet but still a very incandesent green and no bleaching. I have it sitting on the sand but I really didn't know where it should go in the tank...

Do they need intense light and high flow or something else?

I have 2-T-5's, 2-110 VHO's and 2-250 W MH's in my 120. Currently it is sitting about 35" from the lights.

Currently the flow in moderate.

When should I become concerned about it not opening up?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Robert

What type of lighting was it under at the LFS?

I would probably start it out a bit lower in the tank, and slowly move it up. My colony was fine after I switched to MH, but I did acclimate the tank properly to them.

They are easy corals to keep. My colony always seemed to get knocked down on the sandbed while I was gone, and usually there would be some tissue recession where the tissue was on the sand. But, it always healed very quickly. They are also usually pretty fast growers.

I've got one with 3 heads on it. I don't know what you mean about it not opening up. Mine are always open but sometimes not completely expanded to full size. I keep mine high in the tank, under 2 96 watt pcs, mod. flow. Watch out for the 1 to 2 inch sweepers that come out at night. I've had mine for about 5 months. It's even fallen to the bottom of the tank and bounced back. I'd say they're pretty easy.

It had just arrived at the LFS but he had it under some PC lighting. It hadn't opened up yet but he said that it might take a few days.

My LFS is excellent so I'm not concerned about him standing behind the coral... I just want to make sure I am not hurting the situation by putting it in the wrong place in the tank.

Thanks again.

Robert

I find them to be about the easiest coral. One of mine fell onto the bubble coral for a day and kind of shrunk but all of the others are a few years old, no problem.
