Tank Pics Before and After Katrina

This is a sample of what a prolonged power outage can do to a well established aquarium:

When I took the pic of the skimmer, the city was still being evacuated. I live in Jefferson Parish which did flood, but nothing like New Orleans. I was able to get back in because I work at the N.O. airport. I had to get a special pass.
When I got home I looked in the tank and that's what I found.
Nothing survived. It stunk soooo bad, I unplugged everything and poured a gallon of bleach in it, knowing that I wouldn't be able to do anything about saving the rock and sand for at least a month. It was pretty bad.

I got about 6" of water in my house. I still have not gotten a dime from my insurance company, ALLSNAKE!
The damage estimate to my house is $105,000.00

They are doing it to everybody, They put people off as long as legally possible, lowball them and hope they settle for what they offer. IMO it is criminal.
Had I not hired a public adjuster they probably would'nt have sent out their adjusters yet.

What a bummer. I lost my 90G Cichlid and Puffer tank. We lived in Hattiesburg, MS at the time of Katrina. We have since moved and started reefing.

It was an awful mess. We were without power for 2 weeks. Nothing made it.

Our insurance paid us within 3 weeks for our damages. They were awesome. Sorry to hear about your insurance company. Good luck down there. I sure miss the south! We loved New Orleans!

Reefkeepa, did you have flood insurance? If not, I would give up on allstate. We dont live in a flood zone and didnt have flood insurance, but flooded about 3 feet in our house. Our insurance wouldnt even send an adjuster out, said it wasnt their problem. So now we wait for the grant possibility and a small business loan. I too lost my 240 gal. tank. We had to leave for 3 months.

Wow, even a generator would not help with that one.... Now I may know why my homeowners insurance went up 20% if they are paying for flooded houses even without flood insurance. My policy in PA specifically excludes floods unless a seperate flood policy was purchased a.k.a. SOL. Is N.O. different?

Have an aunt in Pensacola that lost her house to Ivan a couple of years ago. Farm Bureau gave her $10K to replace a $110K house. Said that it was flood damage even though the wind took the house and scattered it all over the place. Insurance companies suck. All nice and everything as long as you have no claims and keep paying the monthly premium. Then when you have a claim they don't know you or say it's not their problem because of this or that.

On a side note, State Farm replaced my entire roof due to Rita blowing a lot of the shingles off. Now to find a roofer that is fair, honest and does good work that isn't backlogged for two years.

So sorry to hear about your loss. We had a house fire last year and Allstate was our carrier. We had absolutely no problems with them. They immediately put us in a hotel and then started searching for a rental house for us until our house was ready. The rental was fully furnished. We received a check within a week to help us get by until we were able to inventory everything we lost. I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with them.

brian3, I would switch insurance companies, but they are not even writing policies down here right now. No they wont pay if there was no flood insurance, unless you can prove the wind came first. But I have flood insurance now!! Lesson learned the hard way. Tina

Don't worry. In another year or so the feds will fine Allstate for not making good on the claims. The fine will be less than they should have paid in claims. Gov't keeps the money. Allstate increases premiums. Gov't wins. Allstate wins. Working stiff loses. Can you say AIG?

Great comments,
Yes I did have flood and homeowners.
My public adjuster has come up with a fair adjustment.
Allstate has done the adjustments and is about 2/3 short of reality.
I will get my house fixed. Even if I have to litigate!
SBA is a joke.
I was approved on Jan 31'st for a 40,000 dollar loan and am still waiting on a call.
