anyone ever try purple up?
it says its a xoraline algea accelerator... makes the water very cloudy...
Is adding calcium and iodine the same thing? Ive only used purple up once so far and considering tossing it to the junk pile... anybody got an opinion? |

I'd venture to say if you have a reef tank with good calcium and alkalinity levels purple up would be pretty pointless to buy. High calcium and a good alkalinity level will help you get corallines like crazy.

Don't waste your money. Make sure your magnesium level is 1250-1350, calcium 425 or slightly higher, and Alk around 10dKH. That will do more for you than purpleup ever will.

well, i was using kent calcium daily, and it keeps my calcium at 400. i bought iodine recenty. so purple up doesent replace these? i dont have an alkalinity test.....

get a test kit for magnesium, and alkalinity first. then switch to using a 2 part buffer like B-ionic. once i did that my coralline went crazy. especially on the LR.

Purple up is nothing more than aragonite and calcium in a solution.
As above - keep your parameters in range. High light (MHs) will slow or even kill coralline algae. The one tank that I used PCs only on years ago had the most coralline I've ever seen - it literally was plating everywhere.

I am using it on a new setup just to get the ball rolling. Time, good water conditions and lighting will do the same thing.

Toss it! Coralline is very easy to grow when you follow the above guidelines, and have a fair amount to seed the system.
Right on Johnsteph, Coralline doesn't like super bright light, especially the direct force of higher wattage halides. It won't grow in the most light exposed parts of bright reefs but you'll probably have corals there anyway. It should grow everywhere else, though. |

okok... my tank is 5 months old and i use pcs... its not exploading, but i oviously have coarline. ill get some tests next time im out, it seems to be at a standstill....
