I am a little confused
I have been reading many post's about starting up a reef tank. I am still confused about what a refug exactly does. What grows in one and what does it do? Is it the same thing as freshwater filter's carbon inserts?

A refugium at its most basic is just that, a place for organisms to take refuge without being eaten, harrased from the inhabitants in your main tank.
The reasons people use them is varied but the most reason is to control nitrates with the use of algie,DSB, mangroves etc The algie growing in the refuge will also compete for food with the algie that may be trying to grow in your tank. This is supposed to help keep the display algie in check. Another reason for a refuge is a place where pods can thrive and breed. These in turn will make there way into your tank, keeping your main display populated with them. I am sure you will see many dif reasons and ideas on refugiums but I hope this gives you a start. |
